The R8 Gordini (type R1134) made its appearance at the Paris Motor Show in September 1964[5], after tests mainly carried out by Jean Vinatier. It was the first affordable sports car[6], at the origin of small sports cars[7]. It was indeed the first compact with sporty performance for a production car price. The R8 Gordini 1300 (released two years later) with 103 hp SAE (88 hp DIN), offering explosive acceleration for the time and reaching 175 km/h, allowed Renault to respond to the confidential Simca Abarth 1150 Tipo Corsa with 85 hp DIN.
In September 1966 (1967 model), the R8 Gordini 1300 (175 km/h) appeared, equipped with a 1,255 cc engine developing 88 hp DIN (103 hp SAE) and a 5-speed gearbox. The 1300 version (type R1135), which is recognizable by its four headlights and cooling vents on each side behind the front bumper, adds a three-spoke steering wheel and an additional 25-liter fuel tank in the front trunk.
